Last year, Zack Snyder directed the film Army of the Dead for Netflix. Yet, even as we are still waiting for that film to come out, the streaming service is already planning a prequel film and an anime series. GeekTyrant reports the currently untitled prequel film will focus on the character of Ludwig Dieter, played by Matthias Schweighöfer (Resistance, Kursk), who will also direct. As for anime series Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, it will follow Scott Ward, a mercenary played in the film by Dave Bautista (Hotel Artemis, Blade Runner 2049). In the series, his rescue crew will confront the source of the zombie outbreak during the fall of Las Vegas.
Last January, Netflix acquired the rights for Army of the Dead from Warner Bros. Initially, the film was to be set in the same universe as Snyder’s 2004 Dawn of the Dead remake. Army of the Dead is an action/horror/heist film about a group of mercenaries and criminals plotting to rob a Las Vegas casino during the zombie outbreak.
Beside Bautista and Schweighöfer, the ensemble cast of the film includes Ella Purnell (Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children), Garret Dillahunt (Looper), Ana de la Reguera (Eastbound & Down), Omari Hardwick (Kick-Ass), Tig Notaro (Star Trek: Discovery), Huma Qureshi (47 Ronin), Theo Rossi (Sons of Anarchy) and Samantha Win (Man of Steel).
Army of the Dead should be available for streaming on Netflix at some point. Our current best guess is sometimes in October, because, hey: zombies and Halloween.
