Warner Brothers have released the first official trailer for the new Tomb Raider reboot.
The film stars Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina, 2015) as the legendary Lara Croft. Though legendary may not be the right word for Lara in this film as this looks to be an origin story for the character.
The action doesn’t strike me as particularly riveting and the slo-mo in certain parts doesn’t help to sell it (it was really, really annoying when they did it in Wonder Woman). The closest part to becoming interesting was the leap she made while running on the wing of the plane; partly because it looked almost superhuman in nature. However, the moments where people actually speak is probably the most disconcerting area.
“Death is not an adventure.”
“I’ll take two.”
Mmmm…perhaps these are anomalies.
Regarding this latest take on Lara…sigh.
I like my Tomb Raiders curvy, call me sexist, old-fashioned, misogynistic…whatever, bite me. I like what I like and I like the character as I met her…staring over her shoulder as she performed awesome feats of athleticism. The character struck a chord with me and millions of others. Over the years they’ve been whittling the character down physically, de-emphasizing her once notable…ahem….assets. Carol Manverizing her…I don’t like it. Not one bit. Why some people feel the need to take something that works for so many others…and change it…is something I will never understand.
Oh well, it’s not like I’m actually going to pay to see this. Just don’t see it happening, not unless this film turns out waaaaaaaay better than this trailer makes it out to be.
The film does star Walton Coggins, so there’s that.
Tomb Raider starring Dominic West, Walton Goggins, and Daniel Wu navigates its way into theaters March 16th, 2018.
