M. Night Shyamalan's Unbreakable (2000) came out before the current superhero craze went into effect. I thought it was low-key, but frankly, one of the best superhero origin movies ever made. I still do. In hindsight I wonder if wanting a sequel was a wise idea. It is quite possible the movie stands so well in my memory because there has been nothing brought forth...
