Jensen Ackles (Dawson’s Creek, Days of Our Lives, Supernatural) has been cast on Amazon’s superhero TV series The Boys. According to an article on GeekTyrant, Ackles will appear in the show’s third season as the character Soldier Boy, a Captain America parody within the show’s universe. In the original comic book by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, there are several characters named Soldier Boy. World War II version is a careless moron who gets his soldiers killed, while his modern-day namesake is naive, cowardly, and not too bright.
Eric Kripke, creator and executive producer of The Boys, welcomed Ackles onboard – hardly surprising since they worked together on the first five (best) seasons of Supernatural. That show wraps up its fifteenth and final season this October. The casting of Ackles, who demonstrated both his action and comedic chops in the past, is yet another boon for the show already renewed for a third season. The Boys is fairly popular among comic book fans tired of the more usual superhero stories. This is in no small part due to its over-the-top grotesque violence, dark sense of humor, and edgy cynicism. With superhero blockbusters shelved due to the pandemic, pretty much the only superhero action left are The Boys and The CW’s Arrowerse shows.
The Boys season 2 will premiere on September 4, 2020.
