When they accounced they were making a sequel to the critically acclaimed film Sicario (2015) by Denis Villeneuve I lamented that Hollywood never seemed to know when it was time to exit the stage.

Like most good films, Sicario had a beginning, a middle, and an end. It felt like it told the story it needed to tell. We had come across the character Alejandro (played by Benicio del Toro) as he was upon completing his mission of vengeance. Once he completed his grisly business and imparted a fair bit of wisdom to Kate Macy (played by Emily Blunt) what more was there to tell? Did we need to follow him home and watch what he prepared for his evening dinner? Ah, well this sequel aims to give us a reason to care.

Judging from the trailer this movie has its work cut out for it…because right now this just doesn’t feel necessary, at all.

Sicario 2: Soldado starring Josh Brolin, Benicio Del Toro, and Matthew Modine opens in theaters June 29, 2018
