I ingest audiobooks like Rosie O’Donnell does Twinkies so I was fairly certain that Patrick Rothfuss’s Kingkiller Chronicles was something I had come across before. I just couldn’t remember much about it. So I search through my audible archive and sure enough I purchased and listened to both novels back in 2011. I’m not sure what it means that they didn’t leave a lasting impression but I’m willing to chalk it up to failing memory…or just too many damn fantasy books at the time.
At any rate, I was intrigued when I heard that Lionsgate was going to adapt the series…much less so when I heard that Lin-Manuel Miranda was going to serve as creative producer. Frankly, I don’t trust this guys motivation one bit. Even more troubling news is that the script is being written by Lindsey Beer…who, supposedly worked on the script for Transformers: Last Knight (2017). There isn’t any mention of this on IMDB so it’s hard to say what she contributed and her IMDB bio doesn’t have anything before 2018 so who knows if she is any good.
However, this news of Sam Raimi being in negotiations to direct these adaptations is a step in the right direction. I can easily see Sam directing this sort of project and lending his unique visual sensibilities to the work. I also have more faith in Sam to bring a straight story without any heavy political undertones. Of course, I could be wrong, and if so this project is toast. Maybe he’ll chuck Lindey and pen the story himself. Or bring in his own crew and trusted writing staff and rest it completely out of the hands of Miranda…Ah I could dream.
